A palace as famine relief

The 1920s brought successive failed monsoons to Marwar. The court's answer was not a grain dole but a construction site: fourteen years of paid work, sandstone hauled from Sursagar, a private railway laid to carry it. Whether that is the enlightened use of a treasury or the most expensive make-work scheme in Rajasthan is a question the building does not settle.

The decade, the count and the span are all slightly off.

The famine was the 1920s and ground was broken on 18 November 1929. Sources put the workforce at two to three thousand rather than a flat three thousand, and 1929 to 1943 is fourteen years, not fifteen. Every number in the usual telling is rounded in the same direction.
