Is Jodhpur worth visiting?
The least arguable yes in Rajasthan
Yes — and of the seven Rajasthani cities we cover, this is the one we would defend hardest. Mehrangarh is the fort every other fort in the state gets measured against, the blue lanes underneath it are the best walking in Rajasthan, and two nights is genuinely enough. If you are choosing one city and you are not on a honeymoon, choose this one.
Who it’s for, and who it isn’t
First-timers who already have Delhi and Agra
By then you have had your fill of imperial-scale monuments. Jodhpur gives you a city you walk rather than tour, which is exactly what the Golden Triangle cannot.
Anyone who likes walking
The blue city is a square kilometre of lanes you can get lost in on purpose, and the light does most of the work between four and six.
Photographers
The most photogenic small area in the state, and unlike Udaipur it rewards being close up rather than far away.
Families with children
Compact, and Mehrangarh's audio guide holds their attention — the cannonball scars and the sati handprints are the kind of concrete, slightly gruesome detail children remember.
Anyone whose trip is built around evenings and rest
Jodhpur is a working city, not a resort. It has good rooftops but it does not encourage doing nothing. Udaipur does that better.

Skip it if
- You are squeezing Rajasthan into four days or fewer — at that length, two cities beats three, and Jaipur is the easier arrival.
- You are travelling April to June. The Thar edge runs past 42 °C and the fort becomes something you do at nine in the morning and then stop.
The hour after the fort closes
Mehrangarh shuts at 17:00, which sounds like a problem and is actually the schedule. Come down through the blue lanes as the light turns, and be at Jaswant Thada or a west-facing rooftop for the sunset the fort itself will not give you. Almost everyone gets this backwards and tries to stay up top.
