Albert Hall Museum

Albert Hall is the state museum of Rajasthan, in Ram Niwas Garden, Jaipur, India — its foundation stone laid by the Prince of Wales in 1876 and the building finished in 1887, to Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob's Indo-Saracenic design. It holds the Persian Garden Carpet and an Egyptian mummy, and it is open until 20:00, so the floodlit façade is part of the visit rather than a consolation for missing it.

A museum built before anyone decided what to put in it

Jacob designed the building in 1876 as a town hall. It was Maharaja Ram Singh's successor, Madho Singh II, who decided it should be a museum instead — so the collection was assembled to fit the building rather than the other way round. That is why the galleries feel like rooms in a palace, and why the arrangement is more nineteenth-century cabinet than modern museum.
