Planning · where to stay
Where to stay in Varkala: the areas compared
Pick the area, and any good booking site does the rest. In Varkala the choice is between north Cliff, south Cliff, odayam, Black Beach, Edava, and town. No single house is part of the story here — the cliff itself is; stay on the South Cliff for the walk, or at Odayam for the fishermen's beach, and keep back from the edge.
North Cliff
The strip: cafés, yoga shalas, surf pick-ups, sea-view rooms — and the noise, the touts, and the sixty-nine buildings within ten metres of the edge. Ask how far the room is from the lip; most shacks shut June to September.
South Cliff
Quieter, nearer the temple and the station, fewer cafés. For families who want the walk and the view without the bar.
Odayam, Black Beach, Edava
Narrow black-sand beaches north of the cliff shared with working fishermen, a few cafés, 'least crowded, gentle waves' — still the open sea. A scooter to everything; the quiet week.
Town
Around the station, inland, cheapest and most Malayali; no sea; autos to the cliff. Season runs 1 December to 31 March; the monsoon brings low tariffs and closed shacks.
The one that's part of the story
No single house is part of the story here — the cliff itself is; stay on the South Cliff for the walk, or at Odayam for the fishermen's beach, and keep back from the edge.
What a day costs
Backpacker: ≈ ₹1,500 – 2,500 / day — a town or South Cliff room, the path and the beaches, Kerala breakfasts, an auto (derived from the cost table).
Mid-range: ≈ ₹5,000 – 8,000 / day — a sea-view room, a surf lesson or a flight, a scooter, cliff dinners.
Comfort: ≈ ₹12,000+ / day — a cliff or Odayam resort, ayurveda at a classified centre, a hired car for Anjengo and Kappil.
Getting there
By rail: Varkala Sivagiri station is the easy way in: about 54 trains a day stop — an hour from Thiruvananthapuram, half an hour from Kollam, under three hours from Ernakulam on the Jan Shatabdi, an hour and a half from Alappuzha. The cliff is three to five kilometres from the platform; autos wait.
By air: Thiruvananthapuram International is 45 to 55 kilometres by road — an hour to an hour and a half.
By road: KSRTC buses from Thiruvananthapuram; the town sits inland around the station and the cliff is a separate ride. Alleppey about two hours, Kollam forty minutes.
