The only Mio-Pliocene cliff on India's west coast — a national geological monument with springs falling out of its face.

The bells and the banyan

Dakshin Kashi — the Benares of the south — where a Pandya king found his god floating in flowers and a Dutch captain paid his vow in bells.

The temple with windows

Narayana Guru let light into a temple in 1912, when temples had no windows and Ezhavas no entry — one caste, one religion, one god.

The mouth in the ridge

Travancore's canal went through the same ridge the cliff is made of — 1867 to 1880 — and a poem sent a peacock through it.

The cliff's other trade since the 2010s — and the one place the sea is watched: an instructor in the water, a season that ends in May.

Anjengo's square

The East India Company's fort of 1696–99, where Sterne's Eliza was born and where a six-month siege was held by men too old and boys too young to be soldiers.
