Planning · where to stay

Where to stay in Alleppey: the areas compared

Pick the area, and any good booking site does the rest. In Alleppey the choice is between a houseboat, one night, a Kuttanad homestay, and marari. One house is part of the story: Raheem Residency on Beach Road, an 1868 British-era house restored in 2003, with the Chakara restaurant upstairs and the sea across the road — worth a dinner even if you sleep on the water.

A houseboat, one night

The thing itself, done once with a classified boat and the certificate — then sleep on land.

A Kuttanad homestay

Family homes on the canals at Kanjooparambil, Nedumudy or Kavalam — canoes, cycles, the paddy outside the window. The honest backwater stay, and the better second night.

Marari

The fishing-village beach eleven kilometres north: resorts in the coconut groves from mid-range to CGH Earth's, the boats landing at dawn. For the family who wants sea as well as lake.

The one that's part of the story

What a day costs

Backpacker: ≈ ₹1,500 – 3,000 / day — a town guesthouse, ferries, a shared shikara, toddy-shop lunches.

Mid-range: ≈ ₹6,000 – 12,000 / day — a homestay night plus a deluxe houseboat night averaged, kayak mornings.

Comfort: ≈ ₹20,000+ / day — a luxury houseboat, Marari's resorts, Kumarakom's lake hotels.

Getting there

By road from Kochi: Ernakulam is about 55 km — KSRTC buses every ten to twenty minutes, 1½–2 hours, ₹75–86 (AC ₹129). The airport at Nedumbassery is further, 75–85 km: the prepaid counter runs ≈ ₹2,700–3,400 (app cabs cheaper), 1½–2½ hours.

By rail: Alappuzha station, four kilometres from the beach — the Chennai Express, the Kannur and Dhanbad trains, and the Mangaluru–Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat stop here; for Bengaluru or Mumbai, change at Ernakulam.

By water: The state ferry from Kottayam (Kodimatha jetty) — four departures a day, about ₹30, two to three hours across the lake. The Alleppey–Kollam tourist boat is seasonal at best (December–March, alternate days) — ask at the jetty.
