Alleppey in one day: what to see, in what order
Yes, one day is enough to understand Alleppey — if you follow the light rather than a list. A lake the length of a county, rice fields up to three metres below it, and a town a Dewan planned around two canals — Alleppey is the backwaters' capital, and the honest version is better than the brochure. The day, in order: a kayak through Kainakary's canals → the bund road: water on one side → Ambalappuzha's temple and the palpayasam queue → the 14:30 ferry toward Kottayam for an hour → a shikara on the lake → Alappuzha beach and the pier's iron piles at sunset.
The day, in order
1 · Dawn — a kayak through Kainakary's canals, or the 05:55 ferry there.
2 · Morning — the bund road: water on one side, paddy below on the other.
3 · Midday — Ambalappuzha's temple and the palpayasam queue (ask at the counter for the hour).
4 · Afternoon — the 14:30 ferry toward Kottayam for an hour, or a toddy shop lunch at Champakulam.
5 · Golden hour — a shikara on the lake, or the houseboat deck if you've booked one.
6 · Evening — Alappuzha beach and the pier's iron piles at sunset; the lighthouse if it's before five.
The three you must not miss
A houseboat night, done right. Twenty-one hours afloat with four meals and a crew of two or three; boats cruise from noon and must be moored by dusk, in clusters. Book a Gold- or Diamond-classified boat with the Maritime Board's pollution certificate, a west-facing mooring, and know that 'deluxe' AC runs 9pm–6am only. ≈ ₹10,000–12,500 deluxe · ₹15,000+ premium · ×2 weekends & Christmas · +GST.
Kainakary by canoe. The village eight kilometres out whose eastern half has no roads — paddies below sea level, church bells across water, the United Boat Club's snake-boat shed. A sunrise paddle beats any cruise. Kayak club sunrise ≈ ₹499 · SWTD ferry from 05:55, ≈ ₹10–20.
The public ferry to Kottayam. Two to three hours across the lake and through the alphabet blocks on the state water-transport boat, forty stops, for the price of a tea. The bow seat is the best view of Kuttanad there is. ≈ ₹30 · five a day from the Alappuzha jetty, 07:15–17:15 · verify the timetable.
Why this order
Vembanad is India's longest lake; Kuttanad, the delta at its southern end, is the only place in India where rice grows below sea level, behind bunds the farmers built by hand. The houseboat night everyone comes for is real and worth doing once — if you know the prices, the AC rules, the mooring clusters and the pollution certificate to ask for. The better days are by canoe through Kainakary's canals, on the thirty-rupee public ferry to Kottayam, and at Marari's fishing beach. Come November to March; the August boat race is the other reason. The plan puts the big ticket first, while you are fresh and the light is soft, keeps the middle of the day for shade, and saves the one view that needs the low sun for the end.
If you only have the morning
a kayak through Kainakary's canals, then A houseboat night, done right properly. Half of Alleppey seen well beats all of it seen badly.
