Two days in Udaipur: the plan that leaves nothing important out

Two days is Udaipur done properly: the first for the classic city, the second for water and heights, and a third, if you have it, for the great day trip. Each day below is ordered by light, not by list — tick as you go.

Day 1 — The classic city

Morning — City Palace at opening; give it two full hours.

Late morning — Jagdish Temple, then the old-city craft lanes.

Lunch — a thali house; order the gatte ki sabzi.

Sunset — cross to Ambrai Ghat for the postcard view.

7pm — Dharohar folk show at Bagore ki Haveli.

Night — rooftop dinner with the palace lit below you.

Day 2 — Water and heights

Dawn — the ghats at first light, the lake like glass.

Morning — boat across Pichola; the golden slots book out first.

Midday — Saheliyon ki Bari's fountains.

Afternoon — a miniature-painting atelier; watch before you buy.

Sunset — Sajjangarh, the Monsoon Palace, above everything.

Night — dinner on the Hanuman Ghat side.

Day 3 — The great day trip

Early — car to Kumbhalgarh (2 hrs); walk the great wall.

Afternoon — Ranakpur's 1,444 pillars, no two carved alike.

Evening — back for a final lakeside stroll.

Night — one last rooftop; you've earned the laal maas.

Worth leaving town for

Kumbhalgarh & Ranakpur. The great wall of Mewar and the Jain temple of 1,444 unrepeated pillars — a full day, and the state's best.

Eklingji & Nagda. Mewar's patron deity and the ruined temples by the lily pond — a reverent half day, 40 minutes north.

Chittorgarh. The mother-fort of Mewar's sagas, two hours east — vast, tragic, essential for history-first travelers.

Getting there and away

By air: Maharana Pratap airport (UDR), 22 km east — direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and Bengaluru; 40 minutes to the old city, taxi ≈ ₹600–800.

By rail: Udaipur City station, 3 km out. The overnight Mewar Express from Delhi (≈12 hrs) is the classic approach; day trains link Jaipur (≈7 hrs) and Ajmer/Pushkar.

By road: Excellent highways: Jodhpur ≈5 hrs, Jaipur ≈6.5 hrs, Ahmedabad ≈4 hrs. The Jodhpur run via Ranakpur turns transit into a day trip.
