Lake Pichola

Lake Pichola is the man-made lake at the heart of Udaipur, Rajasthan, India — dammed in 1362 by a banjara grain trader and enlarged by the Mewar maharanas, who built two island palaces on it. The public boat leaves from Rameshwar Ghat and lands at Jag Mandir; the day fare is ₹600 and the sunset slot ₹800. The lake is monsoon-fed and has been near-empty in drought years, so check before you plan an evening around it.

A grain trader's dam, not a king's
The lake predates the city. It was built in 1362 by a banjara — a nomadic grain and cattle trader — who dammed the Picholi stream to move his caravans across. Udai Singh II founded Udaipur beside it nearly two hundred years later and the Mewar house enlarged what the trader had started. The most photographed water in Rajasthan began as freight infrastructure.
