The Cliff Path at First Light
Ninety minutes on foot — start at the South Cliff at a quarter past six with the sun still behind the cliff, walk north, and come down to the beach at the end.
The route at a glance
- 01The South Cliff path, Janardhanapuram side, empty
- 02The springs where the laterite cap gives out
- 03The Middle Cliff
- 04The North Cliff
- 05Down the steps to Papanasam
- 06Finish at the far end, at a distance from the Bali Mandapam
A route diagram, not a survey map — the turns in the order you walk them. Distances between stops in an old city are short; the time goes on looking, not walking.
- 1
The South Cliff path, Janardhanapuram side, empty: the sea grey-blue, the shutters down
- 2
The springs where the laterite cap gives out — water falling out of the face; pipes and bottles below
- 3
The Middle Cliff, the cafés still closed, the helipad headland ahead — keep to the path
- 4
The North Cliff: the widest horizon, the cracked edge; look, don't lean
- 5
Down the steps to Papanasam: read the cliff's bands from the sand, top to bottom — low tide, if the table allows
- 6
Finish at the far end, at a distance from the Bali Mandapam — families at their rites; leave them to it
Before you set off
Save this page for offline reading, or carry the Varkala City Edition, which prints the same route. Old-city lanes are uneven and often stepped; where a stop is up a stair or a ramp we say so in the step itself. If a turn looks wrong, it probably is — walk back to the last numbered stop rather than improvising.
