Planning · where to stay
Where to stay in Kochi: the areas compared
Pick the area, and any good booking site does the rest. In Kochi the choice is between fort Kochi, mattancherry, and ernakulam & Marine Drive. One hotel is part of the story: Brunton Boatyard, on what the hotel says was a Victorian shipyard on the Fort Kochi waterfront, whose History restaurant serves the city's Jewish, Syrian Christian, Anglo-Indian and Dutch dishes — worth a dinner even if you sleep elsewhere.
Fort Kochi
The old town itself — heritage hotels in Dutch and Portuguese houses, homestays on Princess Street, the nets a five-minute walk. Where to be for the dawn and the evening; touristed in the middle of the day.
Mattancherry
Quieter, older, more Kerala — homestays among the spice godowns and Jew Town's lanes, two kilometres from Fort Kochi. For the second visit, or the first if you like mornings.
Ernakulam & Marine Drive
The mainland city: the Metro, the stations, the big hotels and the restaurants; a ferry or Water Metro from the history. For a night before an early train.
