The Canals at First Light

Ninety minutes by water and bund — take the 05:55 ferry to Kainakary Road, or a kayak from the club at six, and be on the water as the mist lifts.

A route diagram, not a survey map — the turns in the order you walk them. Distances between stops in an old city are short; the time goes on looking, not walking.

  1. 1

Out of the town jetty past the Vada and Commercial canals the Dewan cut in the 1790s

  2. 2

Into the Kainakary canals as the sun comes through the palms; church bells from across the water

  3. 3

Walk a bund: the canal at your feet, the rice field a metre or more below on the other side

  4. 4

Past a duck farmer's flock — thousands, driven onto the cut fields to eat the fallen grain

  5. 5

A chai at a canal-side shop; the pump-house that keeps the field dry

  6. 6

Finish at the United Boat Club's shed — the chundan under its roof, sacred, twelve Nehru Trophies

Before you set off

Save this page for offline reading, or carry the Alleppey City Edition, which prints the same route. Old-city lanes are uneven and often stepped; where a stop is up a stair or a ramp we say so in the step itself. If a turn looks wrong, it probably is — walk back to the last numbered stop rather than improvising.
