Planning · where to stay
Where to stay in Agra: the areas compared
Pick the area, and any good booking site does the rest. In Agra the choice is between taj Ganj, fatehabad Road, and civil Lines & the Cantonment. One hotel is part of the view: the Oberoi Amarvilas on Fatehabad Road, six hundred metres from the Taj, where every room looks at the dome — worth a drink on the terrace even if you sleep elsewhere.
Taj Ganj
The lanes at the Taj's south and east gates: budget and mid-range rooms, rooftop cafés with the dome in view, and the dawn walk to the gate on foot. Noisy, touristed, and the right place for one night.
Fatehabad Road
The hotel strip east of the Taj — mid-range to the Oberoi Amarvilas, whose every room faces the dome. Quieter, more comfortable, an auto-ride from the gates.
Civil Lines & the Cantonment
The leafy colonial quarter near Agra Cantt station — calmer, better restaurants, twenty minutes from the Taj. The family base if you're staying two nights.
The one that's part of the story

What a day costs
Backpacker: ≈ ₹2,000 – 3,500 / day — Taj Ganj room, the Taj ticket, autos, bedai breakfasts.
Mid-range: ≈ ₹6,000 – 10,000 / day — Fatehabad Road hotel, a guide at the Taj, two monuments, a Mughlai dinner.
Comfort: ≈ ₹25,000+ / day — the Amarvilas and its like; the view is what you're paying for.
Getting there
By rail from Delhi: The Gatimaan Express leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 08:10 and reaches Agra Cantt at 09:50 (not Fridays); the Bhopal Shatabdi leaves New Delhi at 06:00. Both make a day trip possible; stay the night anyway — the Taj at dawn is the point.
By road: The Yamuna Expressway: 3 to 3½ hours door to door from Delhi, ≈ ₹400–500 toll, FASTag needed. Jaipur is 4–5 hours west via Fatehpur Sikri.
By air: Agra's airport has limited schedules; almost everyone flies into Delhi.
