Planning · where to stay
Where to stay in Thekkady: the areas compared
Pick the area, and any good booking site does the rest. In Thekkady the choice is between inside the park, the Forest Department's, a plantation homestay, and kumily town. Two houses are part of the story: the Lake Palace, the Travancore maharajas' summer hunting retreat on its promontory, used by viceroys and reached only by boat; and Aranya Nivas, built for their officials and named by Nehru in 1963, just above the jetty.
Inside the park
KTDC's three: the Lake Palace, the maharajas' retreat on its promontory, a handful of rooms reached only by boat; Aranya Nivas, the granite lodge above the jetty that Nehru named; Periyar House, the budget one. KTDC asks Aranya Nivas guests to arrive before five.
The Forest Department's
Bamboo Grove's fifteen huts by the gate (₹2,400 with breakfast), Jungle Inn's cottage for two, the Edappalayam watch tower over the lake, tents at Vallakkadavu — booked on the reserve's site.
A plantation homestay
Cardamom and coffee estates at Murikkady, Anakkara and Chellarkovil take guests — dawn in a spice garden. Ask whether the curing house is running.
Kumily town
The bus stand, the market, most restaurants and the budget hotels; Spice Village is the CGH Earth resort. Full mid-November to mid-January with Sabarimala pilgrims.

Getting there
By road from Kochi: 150 to 190 kilometres depending on the route — via Kottayam on NH 183 is the long way — four and a half to five and a half hours. KSRTC runs direct from Ernakulam and Kottayam; Kottayam, 110 km, is the railhead. Cochin airport is 145–190 km depending on the route.
By road from Madurai: 120 to 140 kilometres through Theni and Cumbum, climbing the ghat to Kumily in about four hours by state bus — the Tamil side is the quicker arrival, and the airport is 140 km.
From Munnar or Alleppey: Munnar is 85–100 kilometres and three to four hours on hill roads — the scenic route runs through Ramakkalmedu's wind farm. Alleppey is about 140 kilometres, three and a half to four hours by taxi, longer by bus.
