Planning · where to stay
Where to stay in Panjim: the areas compared
Pick the area, and any good booking site does the rest. In Panjim the choice is between fontainhas and São Tomé, altinho, the promenade and Campal, and miramar and Dona Paula. One house is part of the story: the Panjim Inn on 31st January Road, a family mansion of about 130 years turned heritage hotel, with its Gallery Gitanjali — Goa's first classified heritage hotel, and the address that made the quarter a place to stay rather than pass through.
Fontainhas and São Tomé
The heritage houses — Panjim Inn and its sisters, Mateus, the old hospedarias: stairs, small bathrooms, thin walls, church bells and the poder's horn at dawn, and everything on foot. No parking; book early for Carnival and 8 December.
Altinho
The hill above the quarter — a pool, the view, a ten-minute walk down; a steep approach road. For families who want quiet and a swim.
The promenade and Campal
The river-road hotels by the casino jetty — best parking in town, late feeder-boat traffic. For casino nights and business.
Miramar and Dona Paula
Resort stays three to seven kilometres out with a city address — a car or taxi to everything. For a beach-hotel week within reach of the capital.

What a day costs
Backpacker: ≈ ₹1,500 – 3,000 / day (derived from the cost table) — a guesthouse near the bus stand, thalis, ferries, a scooter.
Mid-range: ≈ ₹6,000 – 10,000 / day — a Fontainhas heritage room, Fontainhas dinners, a taxi day to the islands.
Comfort: ≈ ₹15,000+ / day — the promenade or Miramar hotels, a casino package, a car for the coast.
Getting there
By air: Two airports. Dabolim, thirty kilometres south, is the closer — prepaid taxis at the counter, about ₹1,000–1,200. Mopa, forty-three north, opened in January 2023 and suits the north coast; about ₹1,500, or the Kadamba shuttle. No Uber or Ola in Goa.
By rail: The Konkan Railway since 1998: Karmali at Old Goa, twelve kilometres east, is nearest; Thivim, twenty-five north, serves Mopa and Mapusa; Madgaon Junction, thirty-three south, takes the long trains from Mumbai and Bengaluru.
By road: Kadamba buses from the Patto stand to Old Goa, Mapusa, Margao, Vasco and both airports — pay on board. Scooters are ₹300–600 a day and the real way around; helmets are compulsory and checked.
